Totem Poles

NANCY METZGER, PROJECT DESIGNER

"For my second project at America's Camp, I wanted the children to voluntarily build totem poles. Heavy duty card board cylinders were cut into 1-1/2' sections. Three totems were built. Each one measured about 12 feet high. A whole bunk or an individual camper decorated a section using their own ideas. Being creative and expressing feelings of joy and sadness was our goal.

I wanted the campers to understand that we all come to America's Camp as individuals just as each section was a separate entity. The sections represented how we build friendships that are renewed and strengthened each summer. We can separate the sections, mix them up and stack them right back together.

The quilt and totem together represent our hopes and wishes and the power of friendship and community in healing pain and sadness."
