The Sky Project

TRACI MOLLOY, PROJECT DESIGNER

"The Sky Project, a 20'x8' mixed media mural/assemblage was created with assistance from Emily Puthoff and Elena Sniezek. The structure is comprised of forty 2' by 2' wooden panels that are assembled together at various depths. The background surface of the mural depicts an atmospheric nighttime sky. There is a slight ground line present as well. The foreground of the project is filled with hundreds of "stars." The source of inspiration for the "stars" could be tributes to a person who has been lost, a cherished memory, a proud moment from the year before, or a celebrated event from America's Camp. The elements were collaged onto the surface of the wooden panels to form a colorful, emotional sky.

The idea for the piece came from a conversation with a female camper the previous year. She pointed out her panel on the Quilt Slam project (which showed a galactic scene) and told me she likes to look up to the stars when she talks to her father. This conversation was the impetus for the Sky Project."
